Scientifically known as Nepeta Cataria, catnip is a Lamiaceae (mint) family member. It originated in regions of Asia, Africa, and Europe but now grows worldwide.
The oil in catnip, Nepetalactone, is found in the highest concentration in the plant's stems, leaves, and flowers. This oil is what causes the reaction observed in cats.
