Every day when I grab my keys to head out, my golden retriever Buddy doesn’t pace by the door anymore—he trots straight to his crate. That’s a world of difference from before, when our old metal crate made him huddle in the corner, tail tucked, like he thought I was leaving him “locked up.”

This one’s different. It doesn’t look like a “crate” at all—more like a little piece of our home. The wood matches my living room couch, so it doesn’t stick out like an eyesore; when I’m reading on the sofa, Buddy rests his chin on the bars (they’re just the right height for his fluffy head) and watches me, no more anxious pacing.

The top shelf? I keep his favorite peanut butter treats there, and his tattered duck plush—you know, the one he carries everywhere. Mornings, I’ll grab a treat and tap the shelf, and he’ll sit up straight, ears perked, like he’s saying “thank you” before I head to work. When I come home late, the first thing I see is him curled up inside, duck plush by his paw—calm, safe, like he knew I’d be back.

It’s not just a place for him to stay. It’s where he waits for me, where I leave little bits of love (those treats, that duck), where our days start and end together. For a pet parent, that’s worth every penny—because Buddy’s not just a dog. He’s family, and he deserves a corner that feels like it’s his.
